West still absent due to personal issues

LeBron James says the Cavaliers will welcome back Delonte West, whenever he comes back.

West was absent from training camp for the second straight day Wednesday morning while he deals with personal issues. Cavaliers general manager Danny Ferry has spoken at length to West, coach Mike Brown said, adding that the absence is unexcused and that West will be fined.

Ferry declined to meet with reporters Wednesday.

Florida coach Urban Meyer says quarterback Tim Tebow continues to show improvement from his concussion.

Meyer said Wednesday on the weekly Southeastern Conference teleconference that Tebow "looked terrific" when he saw him late Tuesday night.

"That's the best I've seen him," Meyer said.

Meyer also saw Tebow earlier Tuesday, when the coach went through balance and memory tests with his star player, and said he just looked OK.

Texas wide receiver Brandon Collins and defensive back Christian Scott have been ruled academically ineligible by the NCAA and will miss the 2009 season.

Neither has played this season for the second-ranked Longhorns. Texas officials announced the decision Tuesday night.

Both players are enrolled in classes and are in good academic standing with the school, but must make progress toward their degree. They will be allowed to continue practicing with the team.

The Cleveland Indians have fired manager Eric Wedge in the final days of a disastrous season.

Wedge guided the Indians to one playoff appearance in seven seasons, and this year the club fell out of contention early and is currently one game out of last place in the AL Central.

The Indians have scheduled a Wednesday afternoon news conference at Progressive Field to announce Wedge's dismissal.

Wedge will finish out the season as manager.
